Merry Christmas One and All

Over the last few months I have been busy making decorations for my school Christmas fair, as well as for family and friends. The robins and puddings were an absolute winner and the fair was a great success!
I'd also planned a family Christmas get together at my place, entertaining fourteen guests, eating a truck load of food and getting into the festive mood.
In November, my mother, daughter and I were featured in the December issue of Company magazine, which was pretty cool! We had such a lovely time at the studio, getting made up and being shot by a hot photographer. It was really lovely when a stranger stopped my daughter and I, at the car boot sale, to tell us how much she had loved the feature.
I even had my face in issue 3 of The Simple Things magazine.
The feature was on my daughter and her love of tea, but they wanted my face too.
It would've been rude to say no! The magazine is a very interesting read, from cover to cover, filled with lots of interesting articles on 'making, upcycling, growing, cooking, entertaining, escaping and relaxing', with beautiful  photography.
My daughter also landed a modelling job for Miss Selfridge, which was pretty amazing.
You can see more pictures here. I am a very proud Mama!
I now spend most of my time on my Barri-Jayne Makes facebook page, where I post a little more regularly. Do pop over and take a look.
I've been drying lots of orange slices to decorate my home, creating garlands, centerpieces and also pinning them onto candles using dressmakers pins. I'm really looking forward to the Christmas holidays.
Three more working days then two weeks of chillaxing!

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and all the best for 2013.

My First Handmade Wedding Bouquet

Congratulations to my sister who got married last weekend to a very lovely man.
It was a chilly but beautiful day, filled with happy smiles and laughter.
I recently taught myself to make fabric flowers and I'm proud to present my first handmade wedding bouquet, especially made for my sister. The men also wore handmade corsages.

No Sew Fabric Carnation Flowers - Tutorial

I recently taught myself to make fabric flowers!
It's been great experimenting with different fabrics and methods.
I found this to be one of the easiest.
These flowers were made using lightweight calico, felt, tacky glue, cocktail sticks and gold thread.
Using pinking shears, cut out seven circles approx 3.5in diameter.
                                                              Fold each circle in half...
then fold into an 'S' shape.

Cut out a small circle, approx 1in diameter, and snip a hole in the center
 Add tacky glue...
Carefully stick six petals onto the circle...

                                                                     fluff up a little...
Place a dot of glue onto bottom edges (corners?)...
                                                                    squeeze together...
                                                                     Nearly there...
Fold the extra petal into a smaller petal and hold tight...
                                                          Glue cocktail sticks into folds...
                                                          carefully place under a weight...
When dry insert into center of your flower...
add a little glue to the base...
                                                            squeeze for a few seconds...
leave to dry, then fluff up.
I finished off by wrapping the sticks with gold thread.
                                                                          Ta dah!!

Here's a sneak peek of a little something I've been busy making for a special someone.
Full pictures soon x
Enjoy the rest of your week!

A Week at Cottage Farm

Cottage Farm was our beautiful home for a week in Church Preen, Shropshire. My daughter, eight other family members and I had such an amazing time. The weather was warm, sunny and dry for most of the time and the occasional rain did not dampen our moods in the slightest.
There was more than enough space for us to run around without getting on top of each other. The garden was so enormous we actually had games of football and badminton going on at the same time. We made friends with a lovely horse called Chester. One night we stayed up stargazing and was fortunate enough to witness part of a meteor shower. Amazing!!!
We enjoyed visits into Shrewsbury, Much Wenlock, Church Stretton and Ludlow, popping into gorgeous tea rooms, charity shops, antique shops, sweet shops and just having a wonderful time.
We went on a guided tour of Wenlock Casle in the pouring rain and had a few goes at archery.
We were all soaking wet, but it was so much fun.
We'll definitely be planning another UK cottage holiday for next year.
Any Recommendation?

Enjoy the rest of the week and have a lovely Bank Holiday Weekend!

Battersea is Bloomin' Beautiful

It's been really lovely watching the changes in the Old English Garden, in Battersea Park, over the past months. This is it at it's best! It's become more of a secret garden with beautiful plants and flowers creating private areas. I've been coming here more often for walks, especially as the weather has been so glorious of late. It's also such a beautiful location to take photos for my daughter's blog.

Week one of my summer holiday over and it's been a fabulous first week!
Five more to go!!!
Enjoy the Olympics and have a Happy Summer!

An Afternoon in Brighton

Yesterday, I spent the afternoon in Brighton with my mum and daughter.
It's been years since I've been there.
The weather wasn't the best, mostly wet and windy, but that didn't spoil our day.

It was lovely to walk around North Laine, popping into sweet heaven,
getting lost in an amazing Flea market and visiting loads of wonderful little shops.

We took a stroll along the Pier into the arcade and later a little walk on the pebbles and stones.
I wanted to buy a stick of rock, but was too shocked at the prices! Seriously overpriced!!!

Before heading home we stopped for dinner. Sadly it was a bit of a disappointment.
'Tough' Steak for me and 'Hunt for the fish' and chips for mum and daughter.

Aside from that it was a very lovely afternoon and definitely something I'd like to do more often!

Hope you are having a lovely week, despite the nonstop rain!
